About André R Simon: Harley Street Cardiac Surgeon

Mr André Simon is an internationally recognised cardiac surgeon with a special interest in heart and lung transplantation and the implantation of ventricular assist devices.  He undertook medical training in Germany and the United States, attaining his Doctorate at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel and a Higher Doctorate from the Hannover Medical School.  From 2007-2010 Mr Simon was Director of the Hannover Thoracic Transplant Program, and was Director of the European Academy for Organ Transplantation (EUCAT) based in Hannover from 2009 to 2010.

Mr Simon has been Consultant Cardiac Surgeon and Director of Heart and Lung Transplantation and Ventricular Assist Devices at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust since 2010.  He also holds an honorary senior lectureship at Imperial College, London.

A leading specialist in complex cardiac surgery

The Hannover Medical School enjoys a worldwide reputation in the field of heart and lung transplantation, and during his time there Mr André Simon was instrumental in the development of a minimally invasive technique for lung transplantation that preserves the sternum, resulting in a safer and cosmetically more acceptable procedure for the patient.  Now based in London, he continues to be actively involved in the development of surgical treatments for heart failure, including ventricular assist devices (VADs).  Also known as ‘artificial hearts’, these small implantable devices are used to support the heart whilst awaiting transplantation, and are beginning to be used therapeutically.

Mr Simon is a specialist in all forms of complex cardiac surgery including heart and lung transplantation, the implantation of VADs, aortic and mitral valve replacement and repair, and coronary artery bypass surgery.

Research interests and publications

Clinically, Mr André Simon has an interest in all aspects of complex cardiac surgery, including critical care and extracorporeal life support.  His scientific interests include the immunology of transplantation and cardiac imaging.   He is a regular contributor to the scientific literature, authoring more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and contributing several chapters to medical textbooks.

As a respected expert in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, Mr Simon sits on several international boards and advisory committees, and is a reviewer for a number of leading journals.  He is in frequent demand as a lecturer at international meetings and conferences.
