Consultant Cardiologist Rob Smith: clinical interests

Dr Smith manages all aspects of general cardiology including the investigation and management of chest pain, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, palpitations and dizzy spells. He also has expertise in a number of specialist clinical areas

  • Coronary stenting. Rob leads the audit for the large primary angioplasty programme for heart attack patients at Harefield Hospital. A specialist in complex stent procedures and intracoronary imaging techniques, in addition to the standard femoral route, he performs angioplasty procedures via the radial artery route which promotes more rapid recovery.

MitraClip is a 'keyhole' or percutaneous procedure to repair a leaking mitral valve. It is particularly suitable for patients unsuitable for open heart surgery or who have heart failure.
  • Permanent pacemaker. Rob has a specialist interest in the management of bradycardia (slow heart beat) and pacemaker insertion.
  • Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). Rob is an expert in the management of HOCM and has established a specialist group dedicated to managing patients with the condition including alcohol septal ablation.

Research interests include myocardial ischaemic preconditioning and optimal strategies for the deployment of intracoronary stents using intracoronary optical coherence tomography.

He is trial manager at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust for the ORCA-2 clinical study using optical coherence tomography (OCT) to examine the relative rates of stent strut malapposition during coronary angioplasty.
