Checking a doctor's registration and qualifications

Checking doctor qualifications - operating theatre

The General Medical Council (GMC) holds information about all the doctors who are registered to practise in the UK on its List of Registered Medical Practitioners and this is updated daily.  This register includes general information such as name, GMC Reference Number, dates of registration (provisional, full, specialist or limited), gender, current registration status, primary medical qualifications and specialist qualifications.

The GMC does not advise or recommend any particular doctor or give comments or views about how suitable someone is to carry out a particular procedure or treatment.  This register of qualified doctors is essentially about ensuring that all registered doctors maintain the standards the public and the medical profession expect.

Common abbreviations for medical qualifications

On our Private Healthcare UK site, We provide an extensive list of the abbreviations of medical qualifications which will help you to understand what the letters after a doctor's name stand for.
