Dr Ana Wilson, Consultant Gastroenterologist

 Dr Ana Wilson is a consultant gastroenterologist and specialist gastrointestinal endoscopist, based at the internationally renowned St Marks Hospital for gastrointestinal disorders, and The London Clinic. She specialises in inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) and functional disorders. Dr Wilson leads the service at St Mark’s Hospital for management of patients with gastrointestinal consequences of cancer treatment (eg. Low anterior resection syndrome, radiation proctopathy).

Training and experience


Dr Ana Wilson qualified in 2002, from the University of Oxford. She then in 2005, achieved membership of the Royal College of Physicians and trained in both gastroenterology and general internal medicine in Oxford. Dr Wilson spent three years undertaking research in the use of colonoscopy in diagnosis and assessment of pre-cancerous polyps at the Wolfson Unit for Endoscopy, St Marks Hospital (MD Res, Imperial College 2011).

After completing her extensive training, she was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Specialist Endoscopist at St Mark’s Hospital. She has since contributed to a number of major international guidelines on the use of advanced imaging in lesion recognition. Dr Wilson is now Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London.

Clinical Interests


Dr Ana Wilson is experienced in treating patients with a range of conditions, including:

  • Colorectal polyps (Bowel Cancer Screening accredited colonoscopist)
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis)
  • Food intolerances
  • Functional disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Gastrointestinal consequences of cancer treatment following surgery and radiotherapy for colorectal cancer, gynaecological and prostate cancers

Dr Wilson has an excellent reputation in her ability to manage the consequences of cancer and its treatment. At St Marks Hospital, Harrow, she is responsible for caring for patients with digestive system problems following surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Dr Wilson is a nationally accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist. She also specialises in advanced and therapeutic colonoscopy which in difficult cases can require general anaesthetic.

Research interests


Dr Wilson preserves a wide range of research interests, including the use of advanced imaging in early cancer detection and understanding the aetiology and therapeutic options for patients who have gastrointestinal consequences of cancer treatment 
She also remains heavily involved in both single and multi centre clinical trials in the field of gastroenterology and endoscopy. One of the trials she was recently a co-investigator for was ‘DISCARD 2’, which is a trial that asessed how small polyps in the colon can be defined by imaging in routine practice and was published in a leading journal Gut.
